Summer Stride is the Library’s annual summer learning, reading and exploration program for all ages and abilities.

From June through August, we promote:

  • Author talks, reading lists and book giveaways
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning
  • Mindful experiences in nature
  • Workforce development opportunities for teens
  • Meaningful connections for all ages for our diverse community

Challenge yourself and others to read, learn and listen with the Library this summer! 20 hours of participation earns you a coveted finishing prize: the 2024 Summer Stride Library book tote. This year, we’re featuring art by Bay Area artist Sendy Santamaria

If you are a community-based organization, we’d like to partner with you to bring Summer Stride to your community. Please contact sfplcpp@sfpl.org.

Students, families and educators, the annual Summer Reading List for great recommended reads for Pre-K to Grade 12 is on the way. All SFUSD students will receive the Summer Reading List in their home mailboxes this spring.

Every summer, the Library brings a bevy of fantastic programs for all ages—free of cost. From programs that teach kids about nature, hands-on STEM activities, to music performances and lectures, to authors who speak on topics ranging from SF Bay Area history to climate and environmental issues, to valuable how-to programs on gardening and cooking, you will find something to love at the Library.

Teens, if you will be in Grades 8–12 next school year, can contribute at least 10 hours of helpful, kind service and would like to gain experience for school and job applications, come join the Summer Youth Volunteer program, and help deliver an excellent Summer Stride for all of San Francisco!

To apply:

  1. Fill out the Summer Youth Volunteer application
  2. A librarian will contact you for an interview.
  3. Accepted applicants will take an agreement home for their adult to sign.

Adults, you can get in on the fun too! Keep your eyes peeled for an exciting lineup of author talks, hands-on workshops and other programs.

And fun for all ages: Back by popular demand, we will be hosting field trips to our majestic local national parks.
