February Youth Poets

Fallen King by Anonymous

This poem was written by a teen while he was incarcerated at Log cabin Ranch in La Honda. The poet is a resident of San Francisco and worked with Kim Nelson of Writers Corp.

Like hungry lions struggling to survive
thugs come out at night
running the streets for their pride.

On the corner selling dope
them young lions got no hope
like hungry lions struggling to survive.

Hyena run, hyena hide
young lions kill their enemies
running the streets for their pride.

The young lions are predators, they
kill all those who get in their way
like hungry lions struggling to survive.

Their Mamas say “keep on doin’
what you doin’ you just might die
running the streets for your pride.”

Back on the block doin’ what I’m doin’, just got shot
The young lions crowd around their king
like hungry lions struggling to survive
running the streets for their pride.

I AM GOOD, I AM BAD by Anonymous

I am the breeze in da summer that hits yo face
I am da moon in da sky when da sun goes down
I am a cloud that rains when you are sad
I am the first mad tear that runs down yo face
I am the smog in da air when you can’t breathe
I am a loud noise at night when you can’t sleep
I am that bullet that makes you bleed
I am that person in yo bad dreams
and you wake up and scream
I am that person who hides from da sun
like a vampire and comes out only at night
I am the gun who sees the good die young
I am a graveyard that’s home to many
