When you walk into the renovated Western Addition Branch
Library, you’ll be met with a feeling of both familiarity and newness.
The large reading room is still there, but a new ceiling, lights
and windows make it brighter and livelier. The Children’s Room is
in the same area, but it’s now appointed with new furniture, wall
colors, floor coverings, computers and an early literacy learning
wall. The program room, complete with state-of-the-art projection
equipment, has moved to the south side of the building
adjacent to a new and expanded Teen Area. And the outside
courtyard (right) is completely redesigned and landscaped to
provide a safe, pleasant, seating area.
Just as important is what you can’t see. The branch has been
structurally strengthened for earthquake safety and the mechanical
and electrical systems have been replaced. The staff areas
have been ergonomically designed to help the staff process
books and materials with ease.
