Western Addition Branch Library
Reopens Feb. 2
Renovated branch features new teen area, new outside courtyard—and new Sunday hours!
Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, City Librarian Luis Herrera and members of the community will open the doors to the newly renovated Western Addition Branch Library on Feb. 2. Lion dancers, musicians and children’s
entertainers will join in the celebration, which starts at 1 p.m. Library services begin at 2 p.m.
Visitors to this modern building in a beautiful park setting will enjoy a new entry with automatic front doors, new teen area, improved main reading and children’s areas, a new state-of-the-art program room and a beautifully
landscaped outside courtyard. The library is now seismically safe, fully accessible and technologically updated with new computers and free WiFi access to the Internet.
The Bureau of Architecture’s Library Design Studio designed the branch renovation and the Department of Public Works managed the project. Project costs totaled $4.3 million.
Located at 1550 Scott St., Western Addition is the seventh branch to be renovated or built through the Branch Library Improvement Program, which is funded by a $105.9 million bond measure passed by voters in November 2000.
Over the past two years, Friends of the San Francisco Public Library has been working in partnership with neighborhood residents and community members to raise funds, awareness and support for the branch improvements.
The Western Addition Library Campaign Committee has raised $150,000 to pay for the furnishings, fixtures and equipment in the renovated branch—expenses not covered by the bond.
Along with its fresh, new look, the branch will also feature new Sunday hours. Previously closed on Sundays, Western Addition will be open 1–5 p.m., providing service seven days a week.
With the re-opening of the branch, the following temporary services will be affected:
- The Japanese-language collection in the International Languages Collection (Presidio Branch) will be unavailable beginning Dec. 27 due to its move back to the Western Addition Branch.
- The Western Addition Reading Center, at 762 Fulton St., will stop service on Dec. 28.
- Storytimes at Parents Place on California Street will end on Jan. 29.
- Bookmobile service at Post and Steiner streets will end Feb. 1.
- Starting Feb. 2, the International Languages Collection and the Presidio Branch will be closed on Mondays.
