Library Offers Prizes to Get Teens to
Read During Summer

In an effort to get more teens to hit the books this summer, the San Francisco Public Library launches its Teen Summer Read program June 15–July 27. Teens, ages 13-18, can earn valuable prizes by reading and then recording their thoughts about what they read on comment cards. Teen Summer Read participants will receive a prize for every 10 hours they read. Teens who read 30 hours or more will be eligible to enter a raffle for grand prizes, such as an iPod Nano, Southwest Airlines tickets, amusement park passes, free art classes and more. Those who read 30 hours will also receive an invitation to a teens-only finale party with entertainment and refreshments on Aug. 3.

Prize incentives for Teen Summer Read are as follows:

  • 10 hours – logo backpack
  • 20 hours – personal journal
  • 30 hours – Books, Inc. gift card

Teen Summer Read participants may read books, magazines, graphic novels or newspapers (e-mail is not eligible) to qualify for prizes.

The Teen Summer Read program is free and open to the public. Interested teens can sign up for the program at the Main Library, any branch library or the branch bookmobile.

Teen Summer Read is funded by Friends of the San Francisco Public Library.
