San Francisco Public Library Presents a Panel Discussion
Developing a San Francisco Energy Plan
San Francisco, CA - San Francisco faces many energy challenges. The Independent Systems Operator, state agency that regulates power,
considers San Francisco's power supply unreliable because there is not enough power generated within the City boundaries to meet local needs, and there is not enough capacity in the transmission lines to bring power from outside. Gas prices and energy are volatile statewide,
and the City wants to close Hunters Point Power Plant as soon as possible.
Addressing these challenges, the San Francisco Public Library presents a panel discussion Developing a San Francisco Energy Plan on Tuesday April 9, 2002 at 6:00pm in the
Koret Auditorium on the lower level of the Main Library,
100 Larkin Street in Civic Center.
This program will examine the City of San Francisco's Public Utilities Commission and the Department of the Environment’s draft long-term electricity plan for the City and County of San Francisco that will address a range issues
including developing renewable energy, energy efficiency, fair rates, and more.
Featuring Ed Smeloff of the Public Utilities Commission and former director of Sacramento Municipal Utility District; Danielle Dowers, climate change specialist for the Public Utilities Commission; Cal Broomhead,
energy efficiency expert for the San Francisco Department of the Environment; and Peter O'Donnell, senior energy specialist for the San Francisco Department of the Environment, the discussion will examine various
alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power and discuss a plan that is currently being developed to help the city meet its energy needs with minimal impact to our neighborhoods and environment, and argue that simply building new power plants as soon as possible may not be the best long-term approach to solving San Francisco’s growing energy crisis.
Developing
a San Francisco Energy Plan discussion is sponsored by the Wallace
Stegner Environmental Center at the San Francisco Public Library, the San Francisco Department of the Environment,
and a grant from the Mary A Crocker Trust.
All programs and exhibits at the Library are free of charge and open to the public.
