When I read about this project, I knew I had to participate. As a high a school teacher, I feel that the best way to overcome hate and transform that energy into positive action is through education. I love books, the way they feel in the hand and speak to another in an intimate fashion, and to open this book to find the damage and feel the hatred was a powerful and frightening thing. I wanted to create a visually stimulating and informative work of art that would enchant the viewer with that same intimate communication, held in the hand, asking to be touched, unfolded, opened. At times throughout my work on this book, I asked gay friends to give me feedback and suggestions. One friend told me, “Boy George was my hero in high school. To see a performer that I could identify with as a positive role model helped me make it through a really rough period in my life.” I was delighted to included Boy George as one of my celebrity quotes. I hope the viewers enjoy my labor of love.
