I chose to encase the book I was sent, Prisons and AIDS, in latex, both to reference
condoms and the look of skin. I inset a microscopic image of the AIDS virus into the book,
along with the words “Cell Mate” which I mean to reference prisoners, their sexual
activities, and the virus itself. The book addresses both the severity of the AIDS crisis
within the prison system, and the complexity of implementing strategies to prevent the
further spread of HIV, in an environment where the prevalence of sex between inmates is
not readily acknowledged—by any of the interested parties—making the idea of
encouraging safe sex rather difficult.
