The apple is a symbol of many things. A gift of knowledge. A source of temptation. The
approach we choose determines our fate. This apple was cast using recycled lead type
and subsequently covered with text from a vandalized library book. This construction
references the printed word—and the process through which it disseminates information.
When letters and words are set to paper, they represent thoughts that—in and of
themselves—carry no value. As readers, we interpret these ideas and subsequently act on
our interpretations. It is these interpretations and actions—rather than the printed word
itself—that warrant commendation or condemnation. When we approach the printed
word with a determination for understanding, growth is inevitable. Any lesser approach is
an indelible flaw—a typographical error of sorts that stems from and permanently defaces
the reader.
