I am an Oakland-based collage artist working in 2D and 3D format. I am also a long-time
public library employee and a published poet. I believe that words and images are
crucial to our human existence. In my work, I use a variety of materials such as acrylic
paint, oil pastels, fabric, paper, photographs, glass and other found objects. In these
collages, entitled Partings at Dawn I and II, I seek to thwart and reverse the negative
energy of this book’s slasher, by creating a visual memory of the work thus changing his
acts of destruction into images of hope and even adding humor. It is my goal to see that
this subject matter, Japanese gay literature, is made visible again, and cast in a more
positive light than was intended by the slasher. Ultimately I would like to see the book
replaced in the library’s collection.
