CLAUDE DIETERICH A., graphic designer and teacher of calligraphy and letterforms, is originally from Avignon, France. After studying fine art and graphic design in Grenoble, France, Claude worked as a graphic designer in Paris. Wanting to learn more about Andean music, Claude traveled to South America, settling in Lima, Peru, in 1961. He opened a design studio in Lima, and, for the next 25 years, designed a prodigious quantity of logotypes, corporate identities and publications, many of which won awards for excellence. Claude also taught at the Catholic University in Lima, and, during his seven-year tenure, was the dean of the Graphic Design Department. One of Claude’s most influential calligraphy teachers is Hermann Zapf, with whom he studied in Rochester, New York. Shortly after this period of study, in the mid 1980s, Claude moved to the United States, residing in New York and then in Miami. Since arriving in San Francisco, he has taught calligraphy and letterforms at the Academy of Art University. He also engages in freelance design as well as teaching other calligraphy workshops and classes in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1997 he traveled and taught workshops in both Mexico City and San Luis Potosi, Mexico; beginning in 2002, Claude has spent his summer vacations teaching in Lima, Peru. Claude’s work has been exhibited and published widely. His calligraphy is in private collections in the United States, Europe and South America; his work is also represented with examples in the Harrison Calligraphy Collection, San Francisco Public Library, and in the Harry Ransom Humanities Center, University of Texas at Austin.
