The Ingleside Branch is currently located in a leased facility, the former Bank of America building, on Ocean Avenue at Faxon. As part of the Branch Library Improvement Program, the San Francisco Public Library has purchased the Sunset Auto shop at 1298 Ocean Avenue (at Plymouth) to build a new branch library.

The new building will be approximately 6,000 square feet and one story high. The architecture team of Fougeron Architecture/Group 4 has been chosen to design the building. They were selected after a long process, ending with a three-firm Design Competition (see Ingleside Design Competition (PDF)). Note that the Design Competition process chose an architect, not a final design.

Construction began in February 2008, with the new branch to open in late 2009. The current Ingleside branch will continue to serve the public during construction. The project has an estimated budget of $2.6 million, not including site acquisition costs.

To supplement the City's bond funds, the Library applied for and was granted State Proposition 14 funding for the Ingleside Branch Library. For more information, view SFPL Awarded $9.7 Million.

The new branch will have defined children's and teen areas, a program room, accommodate a growth in the collection of books, videos, DVDs and books on tape, include more public computers and provide a variety of seating choices.

There have been many community meetings to choose a site, prioritize potential services, and discuss design ideas for the new branch.

The Ingleside Branch is also included in the Branch Library Improvement Program Arts Master Plan. The Ingleside Branch Community Artist Selection Panel selected Eric Powell to create art for the new branch. Eric makes gates, railings, and fences by manipulating and treating steel with a variety of techniques and coatings. For more information visit his website at www.ericpowell.com.

The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library are raising funds from private donations for new furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the branch library. For information on the Ingleside neighborhood campaign, contact marian.ctaylor@friendssfpl.org.
