We did it! On July 9th, 2005, we celebrated the reopening of the Excelsior Branch Library. Hundreds of people joined us for a parade, ice cream and cake, music and entertainment, and congratulations by Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Sandoval, Ed Lee, and community leaders. More importantly, they came to check out books, use the new wireless access, read the newspaper, find their favorite CD, research via the internet, and enjoy the newly opened library.

The Excelsior Branch is the first of nineteen branch library renovations, along with the construction of five new branches, funded through the Branch Library Improvement Program, approved by voters in 2000.

Excelsior library highlights include:
  • Completed on schedule and on budget
  • Seismically safe and fully accessible
  • Solar panels installed for energy efficiency
  • New infrastructure for 21st Century information technology
  • Updated book and materials collection
  • Ergonomically designed work areas
  • Flexible program room with adjacent patio
  • Beautiful acoustical ceiling and light fixtures
  • Maximum use of natural light

Thanks to the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and a generous outpouring of community support, the Excelsior Branch’s interior has also been completely revitalized with all new furniture and new computers with access to the internet and library online resources. The Friends continues to raise funds from private donations for the branch library. For information on the Excelsior neighborhood campaign, contact marian.ctaylor@friendssfpl.org.

We urge you to stop by the branch at 4400 Mission Street and see the improvements for yourself. This is just the first of many wonderful library projects soon to be completed.
