Celebrating Asian American Heritage

The month of May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and the San Francisco Public Library celebrates the diversity of our community with a series of exhibitions and programs. Events at the Library include a hula demonstration, Chinese dance performances, a Japanese comedy show, and a book launch by a Filipino American historian, among others.

    Filipinos in Stockton Book launch - Local Filipino American historian and San Francisco State University Professor Dawn Mabalon discusses her new book. Main Library, Latino/Hispanic Community Room,

  • Saturday, May 10, 2 p.m.
    Manchu Yangge Dance Demonstration - Yumei Hou, a Chinese folk art performer, will demonstrate and teach the Manchu-style Yangge dance.

  • Sunday, May 11, 3 p.m.
    English Rakugo by Katsura Kaishi - Katsura Kaishi will demonstrate Rakugo, a form of Japanese comic storytelling.

  • Tuesday, May 13, 4 p.m.
    Stories by Charlie Chin - Storyteller Charlie Chin will present “Hugh Liang, Eyewitness to the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906.” For ages 7-12. Space limited. Call (415) 355-2889 for reservations.

    Stories by Emily Papert-Williams - Emily Papert-Williams will share folktales and stories from across Asia, including some examples of Kamishibai storytelling. For ages 4-7.

    The Flying Angels Chinese Dance Company - The Flying Angels Chinese Dance Company will perform an ensemble of Chinese dances entitled “Of Mice & Mongolians.” For children of all ages.

  • Wednesday, May 21, 6 p.m.
    Film Screening with Guest Speakers - Featuring a short film highlighting some significant events in Asian Pacific American History in San Francisco and guest speakers.     Hula for Children - Misao Mizuno will give a brief history of early Hawaiian (Polynesian) dance, perform and then teach the children basic hula steps and motions to “Pearly Shells.” For children of all ages.
