Trash to Treasures: Art from recycled materials

The Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco
Event detail

The Artist in Residence Program at Recology San Francisco is a unique art and education initiative that provides artists access to discarded materials, a stipend, and a large studio space. By supporting artists who work with re-used materials, Recology hopes to encourage people to conserve natural resources and promote new ways of thinking about art and the environment. Since 1990, over ninety-five professional Bay Area artists and twenty-five student artists have completed residencies. The art studio is located at the San Francisco Solid Waste Transfer and Recycling Center, a 47-acre facility that includes the transfer station, the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, the Organics Annex, the Public Disposal and Recycling Area (“The Dump”), and other recycling facilities. Artists have scavenging privileges for four months and during the final week of the residency the public is invited to attend their exhibition. Each year more than 5,000 children and adults attend tours of the facility which include meeting and talking with the artists. Recology works with the Department of the Environment to schedule tours for San Francisco school students, and public tours are held monthly. The program prompts people to think about their own consumption practices and encourages a greater consciousness about our impact on the environment.

This is a Green Stacks event.
